In our current age of AI, more and more of the content we create and consume is not made by humans. While using artificial intelligence as a tool can result in wonderful creations, on some level they remain just that - artificial. Fake. Not real.
Some of us yearn for the before-times; when everything wasn’t available immediately for everyone, when some things were hard to find - and, when finally discovered, appreciated immeasurably more than anything we now have near-infinite access to.
The underground nature of tape trading, zine culture and demoscene of the 80s and 90s is what made them special. Getting physical mail from across the globe - being a part of something only a handful of people knew about - was exciting, exhilarating... and exclusive.
Many of us want to relive that magic - or perhaps experience it for the first time. To move away from the digital and return to the analog ways of doing things. Away from constant dopamine hits, toward something that actually feels worthwhile.
